Description

Distal Extension Clamp – Access the Last Molar

The distal extension clamp creates space and visibility for challenging posterior Class II
restorations on the terminal molar. By seating the clamp on a premolar, you retract the rubber dam distally,
which opens the working field, improves matrix placement, and reduces interruptions during finishing.

When to Use a Distal Extension Clamp

Choose this approach whenever a standard clamp interferes with the band or ring, when the last tooth in the arch
needs a Class II, or when distal tissue makes isolation difficult. Because the dam is pulled posteriorly, wedges,
separators, and finishing strips can be placed more predictably, ultimately shortening chair time and improving
contact quality.

How the Distal Extension Clamp Works (Premolar Placement)

First, isolate and try-in. Next, place the clamp on the premolar using standard rubber dam forceps so the distal arm
stretches the dam toward the molar. Then place and sculpt composite; since the field is clearer, embrasures and line
angles form more consistently. Finally, light-cure and finish with fine strips and polishing tools. For isolation
techniques, see step-by-step articles on
StyleItaliano.

Key Features

  • Distal extension arm: Extra room and visibility for distal cavities on last molars
  • Matrix-friendly: Helps prevent band and ring interference
  • Soft resin body: Gentle contact; light, secure grip
  • Not autoclavable: Chemical disinfection only (follow clinic protocol)
  • Premolar placement: Compatible with standard rubber dam forceps

Pro Tips with the Distal-Access Clamp

Pre-contour and burnish the matrix at contact height; additionally, pre-warm composite for better flow. For efficient
sculpting, pair with the OptraSculpt Instrument; then
reach a high gloss using tools in Finishing & Polishing. Need

Care & Disinfection

This soft-resin device is not autoclavable. Rinse to remove debris, immerse in an approved chemical
disinfectant for the manufacturer’s stated contact time, and allow to dry completely before storage. Avoid heat or
steam to preserve shape and elasticity.
